Some thoughts on Quality of Life...

The concept of ‘quality of life’ is completely subjective and almost pointless to try to measure. Every year, researchers spend money on trying to identify ‘happiest’ countries in the world based on questions like ‘do you think you will be happier next year than you are this year?’ However, the answers are almost impossible to standardize or universalize because both questions and answers are inextricably context-dependent; it is all relative to the place, culture, and the construction of meaning within that place or culture. ‘Quality of life’ must be determined within local context—i.e. people must draft their own desires for the future by being empowered by their government to do so—rather than determined by empirical data and applied universally.
